Thursday Theatre Talk, 11/20, 5:30p, FREE
Enjoy a FREE Thursday Theatre Talk about the classic story
Join Miriam Gilbert, Professor Emerita of English, and her guest, Garrett Stewart, James O. Freedman Professor of Letters, on Thursday, November 20, 2015, 5:30-6:30PM at Riverside Theatre, as they discuss Dickens and A Christmas Carol.
Even if calling Charles Dickens “the man who invented Christmas” is something of an overstatement, there’s no doubt of the enduring popularity of A Christmas Carol. This novella, written in 1843, and never out of print since then, has been adapted for film, opera, ballet, and numerous stage versions; indeed, Dickens gave over 100 readings of the story during his lifetime. What makes A Christmas Carol so compelling—and, to extend the question, how does this short book fit into our understanding of Dickens’ literary career?
