RED Thursday Theatre Talk, 8/28, 7pm, IC Public Library

August 19, 2014 - 1:06 PM

Join us for a Thursday Theatre Talk on the opening show of the season, RED by John Logan

August 28, 7:00PM, Iowa City Public Library, Room A

FREE and open to the public.

John Logan’s play, Red, opens with a question from the painter Mark Rothko to his new assistant:   “what do you see?”   That’s just the first of many issues raised by this award-winning play (6 Tony Awards in 2010).   What is contemporary art?   How does an artist negotiate his relationship to the world of commerce?   And, repeatedly in this play, what connects—or separates—Rothko from the painter who seems to haunt him, Jackson Pollock?

Join Miriam Gilbert and her guestS, Craig Adcock, Professor of Art History and a specialist in 20th century American and European art, and and Dale Fisher, Curator of Education at the University of Iowa Museum of Art as they explore the artistic and cultural background of Red.
